Product Details

The classic, glossy deep green foliage of Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal' is the perfect foil for its bright red plumes of fluffy flowers. This plant makes a good ground cover in moist situations, and a superb cut flower, fresh or dried. It makes a dazzling combination with yellow-green leaves of Hakonechloa macro 'All Gold.' Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Astilbe is a rugged and beautiful genus of shade dwellers that throw lovely flower spikes above divided foliage in summer, when color in the shade garden is hard to come by. Use them in groups in the woodland border, or mass them for ground cover. Bloom varies by variety from mid-June to the end of August; with careful selection, the display can be sustained through most of summer. In evenly moist or wet soil, Astilbes are tough, pest-free, and handsome. The only thing they cannot endure is drought. Astilbe blooms are useful for cutting if they are picked when half open.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Slow to start but love them

Now in their second year, these Fanal astilbes are starting to thrive and be showy. To my eye the red has a purple tint (not a warm red).
I have them planted in a spot with heavy stony soil, bright shade, no direct sun, and always moist.

Wait till next year

I planted these at the back of perennials in a partly shady spot with not great soil. They showed up and looked very good, but haven't yet taken off. I'm looking foward to next year.

They were gorgeous

I ordered three of the astilbe's and when I received them as a root, I was a little nervous as to if they would survive. Not only did they survive but they thrived in my little wooded area.

Latin Name Pronunciation: uh-still'-bee

Astilbe are one of the best flowers for light to moderate shade. In average garden soil, requires partial shade; tolerates full sun where moisture is ample. (Partial shade or shade and damp soil are required for best performance in the South and in warm inland areas of the West.) Most varieties fare poorly in dry soil. Many gardeners find the spent plumes attractive and so leave them standing until they are beaten down by inclement weather.

Suggested use: A good choice for somewhat shaded areas in the back of the rock garden, herbaceous border, and in front of the shrub border; also include in the cutting garden.

Culture: Provide soil that is well drained and rather rich in organic matter; plants like filtered light and evenly damp—not wet—locations; 3–4 hours sun; planting depth 1″; space 12–18″; pH 6.5–7.0.

Problems: Few problems with insects and disease but blossoms may dry out prematurely in exceptionally hot weather.
