Showy Lady's Slipper. As Graham Stuart Thomas once wrote, "A wonderful plant, worth all one's pocket money." Gardeners have long lusted after this eastern North American native, but efforts at propagation had been largely unsuccessful until recently. It grows about 24in tall with handsome lance-shaped leaves and rosy white flowers almost 4in wide. Plants require evenly moist, humus-rich soil with an acid to neutral pH and dappled light or partial shade. This gem of the woodland garden has a delicate beauty that belies its hardiness.
