The giant of the genus, with large (2 1/2in) cones of a blue so pale they appear white at a distance. They rest on 6in wide gray bracts that are dramatically veined silver. The ghostly coloring and the sculptural quality of this plant suggest placement in a position of prominence. Bloom is in June and July, but the flower heads remain attractive through August and beyond. Plants are generally biennial; a heavy crop of seedlings ensures a perennial display. Pot-grown.

This highly distinctive genus offers shapes and shades unlike anything else, and valued for that reason. From low rosettes, they send up branching stems crowned with domed flower heads in shades of blue. The stiff and spiny leaves that lie below are likewise colored, as are the stems. Most species thrive in full sun and well-drained soil.
