Product Details

Spanish Bluebells (properly, Hyacinthoides hispanica) are best known for their pendent clusters of blue flowers, but there are also charming pink and white varieties available. Massed in a woodland or sprinkled through the perennial border, they mount a colorful and long-lasting display that will be repeated for many years to come. Not labeled. Mix includes 25 bulbs which will cover 3 sq ft.

This small genus of spring-blooming bulbs from Europe and Asia is one of the most versatile and valuable because of its extraordinary willingness to prosper and bloom in sun to deep shade (some shade is required for satisfactory performances in the South). They thrive in a wide range of climates and well-drained soils, although a site with ample moisture early in the growing season is the key to abundant flowers. They will spread discreetly but steadily, making a cheerful community, then disappear by midsummer. Because Hyacinthoides are later bloomers, they are useful in the transition from early-spring bulbs to the first June perennials.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Healthy but no variety

Every one was white. I was looking forward to the mix.

Bluebells

I planted these 3 years ago, and they are blooming beautifully!! The ones that I planted in good soil are so much thicker than the ones I planted in the 'woods'. As I read other reviews, I realized I should write one because I want people to know that mine all did great!

Not recommended

I planted 25 bulbs in partial shade last Fall of Spanish Bluebells Mixture and 25 of Hyacinthoides hispanica Excelsior. Not only did they not bloom, they never so much as broke ground in the spring. Not a one. This is despite good soil prep, bone meal and mulch. Not recommended.

As always - the largest, healthiest bulb

White Flower has consistently over the years delivered the largets, healtiest bulbs, at a competitive cost. As always a excellent value.

2012 bulbs weak

I bought these after having great luck with a previous order. All of my older plants bloomed the first spring after planting. None of the 2012 bulbs bloomed. All came up, and the plants looked good. But no flowers on the new plants this year. To be fair, the older plants didn't bloom strongly this year either. We had a strange spring; too hot then too cold for plants. I'm hoping for blooms next spring.

Latin Name Pronunciation: hy-ah-sin-thoy'-deez

Bulb size: 10-12 cm

Hyacinthoides loves open deciduous woods in the South and full sunlight in the North. Plant 4–5″ deep, 4″ apart (8 per sq ft). These shade-tolerant bulbs often naturalize. Please note: It is not unusual for blue-green penicillin mold to grow on the surface of hyacinthoides bulbs. The mold does no harm, and it dies as soon as you plant the bulb. If the bulb is firm, you can plant with confidence.
