A large plum variety, 'San Marzano' has been grown for centuries in the Campania region of Italy, where the processed fruits are now labeled with D.O.P. (Denominazione d'Origine Protetta) to guarantee and protect their authenticity. The fruits' deliciously balanced acidic/sweet flavor and meaty flesh are at their best in sauce, which explains why 'San Marzano' has also been designated the official Tomato for Neopolitan pizza. While you may not have the volcanic soil and climate of Campania, we think you'll enjoy growing this heirloom yourself and cooking it up into sauce for pasta or pizza. Its tall vines produce heavy yields of long, cylindrical fruit that average 5–6oz. Indeterminate. Fruits ripen about 78-80 days from transplant.
Our stocky seedlings are grown and shipped in 3in pots that are a full 4in deep, so the plants you receive have strong, well-developed root systems. For more information on growing and care, click Growing Guide.
