The large, heart-shaped golden leaves and erect panicles of white flowers found on Catalpa 'Aurea' are followed later by dangling, beanlike seed pods. This award-winning Catalpa is a mainstay in our Lloyd Border. We encourage the golden foliage by severely cutting branches in spring, a technique known as pollarding.
The handsome, broad-spreading deciduous trees in this small genus, native to woodlands and stream sides in East Asia and North America, are easily recognized by their dramatic, Foxglove-like flower spikes and long seedpods that develop in fall. Birds enjoy the dark shade and shelter within their leaf canopy. Best as specimens in any well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds.
