Every year on a Sunday in May, the Arnold Arboretum hosts a festival devoted entirely to Lilacs. To commemorate this event, the Arboretum selected a free-flowering, vigorous hybrid from seed donated by the Beijing Botanical Garden, and it’s a beauty. 'Lilac Sunday' produces fragrant light purple flowers from the sides of branches as well as from the tips. At maturity it forms a broad shrub with a graceful, arching form.
