The attractive foliage of the Sweet Potato vine cascades from containers, or can serve as a ground cover or as skirts for upright plants. Ipomoea 'Blackie' has deeply divided leaves, ebony above, and purple on the reverse. They offer the perfect foil for every color in the spectrum. Plants stand just 6in tall but can spread 5ft in a season, twice that in the South. Provide consistent, even moisture, along with full sun or partial shade. Thankfully, occasional pinching makes it possible to grow "Blackie" in a container of quite modest dimensions.

Our interest in Sweet Potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) is not in the edible roots but in the attractive foliage of our two ornamental varieties. Their large and colorful leaves cascade from containers in a seemingly endless stream all summer long, and their trailing habit makes them equally useful as striking, short-term ground covers or as skirts for upright plants.
