When you hang the name of a Royal Horticultural Society garden on a new introduction, it had better be good. Both Wisley and Rosemoor are better than good. They come from Raymond Evison’s superb breeding program on the Isle of Guernsey. The rich, 5in purple flowers of Wisley appear on new wood, allowing you to use this compelling shade in a series of color combinations throughout the summer. Dark, wine-red Rosemoor blooms appear on both old and new wood, which means flowering is almost non-stop from early summer to fall.
For beautiful colors, extravagance of blooms, and graceful habit, nothing compares with Clematis, the queen of the flowering vines. Whether used on posts or fences, clambering through shrubs and trees, or following wire frames in borders, these plants will enrich the landscape. Give them good soil, reasonable moisture, and shade at their roots.
