The idea of using the same space in the garden for Tulips and Dahlias first occurred to us several springs ago as we were forking out spent Tulips from a mixed border and pondering how to replace their rich colors later in the season. With a stock of potted Dahlias at hand (luck, not intelligence), we popped half a dozen into the newly vacated space and were delighted with the result. Of course, Dahlias must be dug out and stored before hard frost kills them, and this pleasant ritual creates the ideal opportunity to drop in a few dozen Tulips, reversing the spring exercise and getting the same satisfactory reward. It's not a hard job, nor is it expensive, and the result the following spring is always a sheer joy. By using this strategy, we have effectively doubled the fruits of our labors.
To make this strategy even easier, we’ve created a special collection called Double Play, which includes 25 bulbs of The Corps de Ballet Lily-flowered Tulip Mix and 5 tubers of Dahlias (each a different variety, labeled). The Dahlias will be shipped in spring and the Tulips will follow and ship in the fall at the right time for planting, making your job easy as pie.
