We’re thrilled to offer the award-winning ‘Longwood Debutante,’ which comes to us in an exclusive partnership with Pennsylvania’s world-renowned Longwood Gardens. Yellow Clivias are not as widely available as orange varieties, and, after 35 years of breeding for the best yellow color, Longwood’s research program succeeded in producing this high-quality selection. The lightly scented blossoms are a soft, buttery yellow shade, making an already attractive and durable plant an absolute knockout. We ship sizeable plants, approximately 24″ tall, that should bloom in about 4 months when provided with a period of winter rest in a cool room with bright but indirect light. We have a limited quantity to offer now, and early orders are encouraged. Shipped in a 10½″ handcrafted Wakefield Oldham pot with saucer. Full instructions for care included.
Longwood Gardens began breeding Clivia in 1976 when yellow plants were rare and the quality of their blooms less vibrant. Their original goal was to produce a superior, yellow-flowering variety, which launched them on a lengthy course due to the extended time it takes for Clivia seedlings to mature. ‘Longwood Debutante’ is their widely admired result, with numerous awards to prove it.
Clivias thrive even in a north window and require very little care, growing larger and more impressive with age. Please click on Growing Guide for further information.
WEATHER PERMITTING - Working with Mother Nature
In our business, we work closely with Mother Nature. In the colder months when we stipulate that an item is shipped “weather permitting”, that means temperatures outside our shipping facility in northwestern Connecticut and along the shipping route must be warm enough for tender plants to survive in unheated delivery trucks. Our practice of waiting for windows of milder weather may result in the occasional delay, but our customers tend to appreciate the care we take to make certain their plants arrive in the very best possible condition. HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
