DAYLILIES AND DAISIES -- CAREFREE, SUN-LOVING COMPANIONS
White Flower Farm (www.whiteflowerfarm.com) loves daylilies and daisies. These bright flowers with cheerful faces are the perfect pick-me-ups for any summer garden. Besides loving the sun, each requires little care and comes back every year with vigor. Plant these perennials now or in fall to enjoy in the summer of 2011.
Daylilies (properly Hemerocallis)
Although each flower lasts but a day, the best Daylilies produce many buds per stem. White Flower Farm recommends the reblooming varieties below as a good way to extend the show in your garden.
*** 'Apricot Sparkles' -- Flowers in abundance on a nice compact plant, with 24" flower stems holding 9-10 clear apricot blooms each. The petals have a light dusting that looks like glitter. Add some sparkle to your border!
*** Lady™ Elizabeth – These ruffled white blooms have a graceful beauty and appear in abundance from July to September. Another daylily from the Lovely Lady™ series, it has a compact habit and light scent.
*** Earlybird™ Cardinal -- Bright crimson, heavily ruffled flowers appear prolifically on a vigorous but tidy plant. The same vigor and compactness of 'Stella d'Oro', and the color is outrageous!
*** 'Just Plum Happy' -- With a color combination like this in your garden – rose pink, purple, and yellow -- you'll be happy, too! The blooms measure 6in across on plants that are compact and don't need much elbow room -- perfect for the edge of a walkway or the front of a border.
SHASTA DAISIES (Leucanthemum)
Daisies are some of the showiest and most reliable summer garden plants. Who can resist their happy faces and easy care? Here are great varieties -- some new, others old favorites, all beautiful:
*** Leucanthemum 'Becky' -- The enduring standard for Shasta daisies, with large white petals and sunny yellow centers. 'Becky' becomes a living bouquet of blooms every summer, regardless of heat, and is essential for cut flowers.
*** Leucanthemum 'Banana Cream' -- Go bananas with a yellow Shasta daisy. 'Banana Cream' features 4in, bright lemon-yellow blooms that turn butter yellow. They have an extra row of ray petals, so they look even fuller.
*** Leucanthemum 'Goldrausch' ('Goldrush') -- This crazy daisy combines long, fringed white petals with frilly yellow petals around darker yellow eyes. The stems are shorter, so place the plants near the front of the border, where they can be admired.
*** Leucanthemum Broadway Lights™ -- This matinee star is a daisy that changes color as it matures. Flowers open yellow and turn white, creating a blend of colors on each plant. Sturdy, reliable and easy to grow!
There are still weeks of summer left, but White Flower Farm is already taking orders for fall delivery! You'll find hundreds of spring-blooming bulbs, perennials, and shrubs in the new 124-page fall catalog, which is available both online (www.whiteflowerfarm.com) and via mail.
