Growing Guide Sedum (Stonecrop)

Full sun (or partial shade in the South). Lean, well-drained soil is preferred, S. 'Autumn Joy' also tolerates heavy clay soil. The dried flower heads of S. 'Autumn Joy' , 'Matrona', 'Neon', and others remain attractive in winter, whether left standing in the garden or brought indoors. Mature plants of S. 'Autumn Joy' may require staking - especially if grown in rich soil or given more than the annual light dusting of fertilizer we recomend. Plants will also be more compact if the tips of new spring growth is pinched back by 1/3 when the stems are 4-6in tall.
The low growing forms of Sedum, such as S. borissovae and S. pachyclados, are colorful, vigorous, but well-behaved ground covers, perfect for decorating openings between stones in a path or wall, and invaluable for rock gardens and troughs. They have the same growing needs as the upright forms, thriving with minimum nutrients and moisture. Indoors, they enjoy the low humidity and welcome a sunny location. |
