Partial shade or shade. Grows best in moist soil improved with lots of organic matter - aged manure, peat moss, leafmold, or the like (see Soil Preparation). Where happy, plants spread vigorously. The foliage may look the worse for wear and tear by late summer; cut to the ground and look the other way until fresh foliage emerges in spring.
