Helleborus

  

Hellebores bloom in early winter in mild climates. Here in northwest Connecticut, however, we count on greeting them in very early spring. Plants need moist (but never soggy) soil in the shade of trees. Deer- and vole-resistant, Hellebores combine well with Ferns if your woodland has critter issues. Add plenty of organic matter in the form of compost or leaf mold.
