Growing Bergenia

Latin Name Pronunciation: ber-jen'ee-uh 

Bergenia blooms in April–May with clusters of pink flowers held above large, glossy, round to heart-shaped leaves. Plant is evergreen in zones 6 and warmer; in colder areas it can be sited in a sheltered spot to provide protection. Bergenia are rarely damaged by deer.

Suggested use: Ideal for any spot offering part shade such as a woodland garden.

Culture: Part shade (3–6 hours direct sun). Well-drained, open, gritty soil. Do not fertilize first year after planting; in subsequent years, a very light application of 10-10-10 may be given in early spring. Plants are seldom bothered by any pests or diseases.
