JASMINE, LAVENDER, AND PAPERWHITES
FRESH FROM WHITE FLOWER FARM
Gardens may hibernate for the winter, but gardeners do not -- they just move their activity indoors. The growers at White Flower Farm have selected a broad assortment of flowering houseplants with ease of care in mind to brighten these long winter days. They make fabulous gifts, too.
Jasmine -- Fragrance Beyond Description in the Dead of Winter
Exquisitely fragrant Jasmine plants are a customer favorite for holiday gift giving. Jasminum polyanthum is a graceful subtropical vine that bears intensely fragrant white flowers against dark green foliage in late January and February. This is the perfume of Scheherazade and will fill any home with a rich, sweet scent. Jasmine is easily grown indoors in a cool spot with indirect light.
Grow Fresh Lavender Indoors
While most Lavender plants prefer life outdoors, 'Goodwin Creek Grey' thrives indoors in a sunny window making it easy to enjoy the lush mound of silver foliage and tangy fragrance year round. Spikes of deep blue, pungently fragrant flowers appear in late winter.
Fragrant Paperwhite Narcissus -- The All-time Favorite Bulb for Forcing
One of the most popular winter-flowering plants is also one of the easiest to grow. Paperwhite Narcissus produce large clusters of fragrant white blooms in 4-6 weeks with just occasional watering. Planting the bulbs at 2- to 4-week intervals can keep the show running all winter.
Easy-care Flowering Plants
Other easy-care flowering plants include the indestructible Clivia and Kalanchoe, a variety of colorful Cyclamen, elegant Azaleas, and perfumed Gardenia. Choose from a wide selection of bright blooms to enjoy in your own home or to give as gifts.
Culinary Herbs and Choice Citrus Plants
For the cooks and their kitchens, an assortment of culinary herbs and choice citrus varieties are also available. Rosemary is well suited to growing indoors in containers in a cool, bright sunny window, and an occasional pruning produces fragrant sprigs for cooking. Dwarf citrus are especially popular holiday gifts that, with a little care, can be grown in warm, sunny rooms. Choose from the intensely flavored, zesty fruits of 'Meyer Improved Lemon', Calamondin Orange, and Key Lime. Visit http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com for complete care instructions, plus an informative video on growing and harvesting dwarf citrus indoors.
