START PLANNING YOUR SPRING 2011 GARDEN
White Flower Farm's new catalog is available online or by mail
There may be snow on the ground (or in the forecast!) and frost in the air, but in January and February gardeners' thoughts turn to spring. This year White Flower Farm (www.whiteflowerfarm.com) boasts more than 250 new plants, as well as old favorites and bestsellers, in its catalog. New plants are added only after they pass rigorous growing trials at White Flower Farm in Litchfield, Connecticut. Do note, that although the nursery tries to anticipate the demands for a particular plant, early orders enjoy the best selection. For quick viewing, the catalog is available online at www.whiteflowerfarm.com.
As winter continues, the staff will reveal some of their favorite ornamentals and edibles. There's no question that vegetables and fruits continue to be hugely popular and a growing part of the business. White Flower Farm offers over 100 varieties of tomatoes, as well as herbs and berries for home gardeners. Tomato seeds are being sown at their nursery now; it will be too late to sow more seeds after March -- another reason to order early and avoid disappointment.
For continuous flowers and colorful foliage all season in pots and borders of any size, nothing beats annuals. Look to White Flower Farm for over 200 varieties, including exciting new begonias, dahlias, petunias, plus dramatic King Tut® papyrus. Perhaps this is the year to try a new color theme? Visit www.whiteflowerfarm.com/annuals for ideas and pre-planned collections.
*White Flower farm was founded on perennials, a love affair that is still going strong after 60 years. Their gardeners have winnowed the list of potential new varieties to the very best performers, to supplement their longtime favorites for both sun and shade. View the full offering at www.whiteflowerfarm.com/perennials.
More highlights from the Spring 2011 catalog:
** Hydrangea Vanilla Strawberry™ and double white Magnolia 'Royal Star', climbing pink rose 'Peggy Martin' and Lilac Bloomerang™, plus other shrubs offering fragrance, flowers, or 3-seasons of interest, perfect for anchoring a border or creating a focal point. New trellises and Clematis join the list this year as well.
** A Blueberry that's not blue? New 'Pink Lemonade' has handsome pink berries that are
ornamental, as well as tasty. When the dappled pink fruits turn deep pink in summer, they're ready to harvest.
** The big gift-giving season may be behind us but there are plenty of birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions to celebrate. White Flower Farm offers fresh-cut flowers and unusual blooming houseplants for every month. Send juicy citrus fresh from the grove through the winter, or colorful amaryllis, as supplies and weather permit.
Winter is a time to enjoy indoor plants and plan for the upcoming season. With the new spring catalog, White Flower Farm helps gardeners, and gardeners in the making, get ready for spring.
