Fine Gardening magazine collaborated with White Flower Farm on a series of videos about propagating plants from seed. In this first installment, nursery manager Barbara Pierson shows what she looks for as she collects seed from our Alcea Perennial Single Hollyhocks. We offer a mix under this name, with flower colors ranging from white to pale yellow to pink and burgundy. The plants are raised from seed collected in the nursery’s propagation stock area. Their heights range from 6–8 feet, although we find they don’t need staking, and the flowers measure 4–5 inches across. The blooms are showy even at a distance, but their silky, almost translucent
petals deserve close viewing to be appreciated.
