Down on the Farm -- Taking a Breather
Sugar Maples and Hostas along Esther's Lane.

Dear Gardening Friend,

We've now had several hard frosts, one under a brilliant full moon, that knocked the gardens down and ended the gardening year. There followed a week of intensive clean-up, trimming spent blooms, leaves, and stems, raking, mulching, and replacing name labels, all the while tucking spring-flowering bulbs of every description into available spaces on an opportunistic basis. The results are usually delightful, occasionally unexpected, always instructive. Incidentally, we do almost no pruning of woody plants in the late fall, because the cuts have no chance to heal and can lead to desiccation and serious damage.

Once the borders are cleaned up, the tools in storage, the gas run out of the machines, and the storm windows hung, there's a brief period of loafing in front of wood fires and catching up on back issues of The New Yorker. Sometimes this hiatus runs for as long as two weeks before we feel the itch to be fussing with plants again. The best way to scratch this itch is with a mix of indoor plants, forcing bulbs, and cut flowers whose combinations of flowers, foliage, and fragrance turn the dark days of winter into a delightful and almost effortless indoor garden that sustains our spirits until it's time to start poking around outdoors in March.

We hope to be forgiven for pointing out that our holiday gift offering includes almost everything an indoor gardener could require to get through the upcoming period of enforced confinement. It's a broad assortment of flowering plants ranging from stately Clivias to the exquisitely fragrant Jasmine that we've been preparing all summer in our greenhouses, plus Paperwhites and other bulbs that bloom readily indoors, foremost among which is our selection of premium-grade potted Amaryllis, a GUARANTEED SUCCESS even for non-gardeners. If your taste runs to cut flower arrangements, our Lilies are the freshest and longest-lasting to be had anywhere because they are custom-grown here in New England, shipped the day they are cut (in bud, not bloom) and in your hands in a day or two. If you click HERE, you will find yourself transported to the pages of our holiday catalogue where you can start the new season by treating yourself (and others) to the pleasures of winter gardening indoors. You will not be disappointed.

White Flower Farm Gift Certificates are the Ideal Gift for Gardeners, Both New and Experienced

WHITE FLOWER FARM GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE
THE IDEAL GIFTS FOR GARDENERS, BOTH NEW
AND EXPERIENCED

Because we are plantsmen first, merchants second, our own gift giving seldom strays far from the world of plants. We also know that the very best gifts support the interests and enthusiasms of the recipient, perhaps providing a new idea or experience, rather than the ephemeral pleasure of just another possession. For this reason, we recommend consideration of White Flower Farm Gift Certificates as holiday gifts. Here's what they have to offer:

Three glorious seasonal catalogues, known collectively as The Garden Book, with more than 1,000 annuals, perennials, shrubs, bulbs, vines, trees, and dozens of edible crops including over 100 Tomatoes, 20 kinds of Pepper plants, and the very best of berries and small fruits. Every item will be delivered with detailed instructions and an unconditional guarantee.

A year-round selection of gifts for every occasion, most garden related, but also including fresh Citrus, Pineapples, and Apples in season.

A Web site with hundreds of plant and garden photos, thousands of words of practical, how-to-garden inspiration and instruction, a series of entertaining and informative videos about plants and how to grow them as well as background on our nursery, its people, products, and services.

A cheerful welcome to our extensive trial and display gardens at the nursery, but most especially on Open House Day in June when we welcome old friends and new for iced tea and cucumber sandwiches on the lawn in front of our house.

And as our thanks for introducing us to a new gardening friend, you'll receive a 10% discount off the face value for any certificate of $50 or more. This discount, of course, is invisible to the recipient.

There are a lot of ways to make people happy at the holidays, the best of which is being together. Once that is organized, we hope you will consider our gift certificates as a way to express your holiday wishes.

Spring Starts Here in Early December

SPRING STARTS HERE IN EARLY DECEMBER

Because that's when our entire spring offering will be available at our Web site. The list for 2011 has added 250 varieties, and dozens of important new introductions. You'll also find classic garden plants that were pushed out of our list by the cost of printed catalogues but have now returned thanks to the miracle of the Internet. PLEASE NOTE that our Web site represents much the best way to access all the resources available, including electronic versions of the print catalogues. We will deliver our handsome spring catalogues, this year 144 pages, to active customers in the last week of December. If you have not purchased recently, you will not receive a printed catalogue unless you choose to subscribe. A subscription to the three seasonal editions costs $5 and includes a $10 credit that can be used against your first purchase. This means, of course, that the books are free for active customers and an excellent bargain for readers. Whichever you are, we look forward to serving you.

We hope you enjoy a breather this Thanksgiving Day and like us, can count gardening and sharing plants as one of the things you are grateful for.

Sincerely,
Amos Pettingill
