Product Details

Ligularia dentata 'Britt-Marie Crawford' is a dark-leaved form of one of our favorite foliage plants for partial shade. The large, 6″ leaves are chocolate maroon above and purple beneath. In early summer, pink-flowered Heucheras are a good color match, or you might like to place annuals with chartreuse foliage nearby. In late summer, Britt-Marie puts up a multitude of Daisy-like, bright yellow-orange flowers above its showy foliage. PP 16,113

The genus Ligularia is huge, and the best of the species are large, handsome plants that thrive in full sun when moisture is reliable or even constant and in partial shade where it is not. They are excellent companions for large Hostas.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Invasive!

A row of ligularia was planted along some shady stone steps between my house and the woods. I loved it at first, because of the large, dark and prehistoric looking leaves. Personally, I didn’t care for the yellow-brown flowers, which is the color of gorse, but aside from that, all was well for the first few years. Suddenly though, ligularia was coming up all through the abutting areas of vinca. I had to weed out all the volunteers, and remove the progenitors. I don’t know exactly which variety of ligularia it was, and mine was most likely purchased at a local nursery, not Whiteflower. The landscaper said he’d never seen it grow invasive before, and perhaps there are some varieties that do not invade. But, beware before planting.

A true standout

I have a small shade garden with ligularia at its center, with Japanese painted fern, cinnamon fern and astilbe as accents. The colors and textures are beautiful. The ligularia is spectacular.

Frustrated

I would give this no stars if that were an option. I first ordered Ligularia The Rocket. After waiting several weeks and not seeing any sign of life I dug around and found the bare root was rotted. WFF replaced it with this variety. Today I discovered it too has rotted. I have no idea why this has happened. The growing guide says to keep wet but the person from WFF said “make sure it isn’t too wet” so I thought the first one was my fault. This time I certainly do not think it was too wet yet I ended up with the same results. I have never had trouble growing a bare root before and am an experienced gardener. I’m giving up on this plant but if anyone can shed some light on the problem I would welcome it
Response from White Flower FarmWhite Flower Farm, 4 years ago (06/08/19 01:52PM)

I am sorry to learn this plant failed to survive planting Elaine. With regard to plants that ship bareroot and prefer moist soil, there is a fine line between evenly moist soil and a soil that stays too wet. The plant is guaranteed and I will be contacting you via email regarding compensation.
Sincerely,
Cathy

Beautiful and different

So easy...returns every year. A great contrast with hakonechloa aureola. Fills in the garden beautifully. Bright orange blooms in late summer. Slugs can be problem...but definitely worth having in the garden.

I love this plant!

I found this as a slightly withered purple and green plant in a yard sale and rescued it. It was planted and watered in a little patch of sun, and mostly forgotten, only to be found later as a gold swan in a mostly green place.

I have a very dark front yard surrounded by large oak trees, under which little grows except a variety of strong hosta ranging, from tall and big, to small and bright. In late July that year, it presented tall dark blossom stalks with creative flowers of deep gold. It has greeted me with the same purple, green, and gold every August for twenty years.

We now have a new house, 900 feet away and into an old clearing in a woods, and I will move a couple senior plants there this Spring. It's good to spread the joy! : )

Latin Name Pronunciation: lig-yew-lair'ee-uh

This is a noble plant for streamside, pond edge, or along a woodland margin. These large plants boast bold, handsome foliage and lend great charm to the landscape.

Light/Watering: Plant in partial shade in moist soil. They will sulk if allowed to dry out, especially June through August. Plants will grow in full sun in wet soil, but they wilt no matter how damp the soil is, recovering at day's end.

Fertilizer/Soil: Ligularia grows well in compost-enriched soil. They benefit from a generous layer of organic mulch applied in spring.

Pests and Diseases: No serious pests or diseases, but may need to control slugs and snails.

Companions: These are excellent companions for large-leaved Hostas.
