Garden designers Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd developed this strain of Candelabra Primulas over many years at North Hill, their home in Vermont, and were kind enough to share seeds. The blooms range from soft peach, melon, and pale yellow to warm pink and create an effect as delicate as the brush strokes of a Seurat painting. Provide a moist but well-drained location. Our mix is sold in multiples of 3 in order to help provide a sampling of the full color range.

The genus Primula includes some of the most endearing flowers of spring and has been a favorite of gardeners for as long as records have been kept. Most prefer peaty soils, lots of moisture, and partial to full shade, and they combine colors and forms in ways that will win your heart. Our plants are held in cold storage to discourage early bloom, but we are not always successful. These early breaks do not affect future performance in your garden and are not cause for alarm.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Stunning!

I bought six North Hill primulas last spring and planted them in a part shade location under a mature oak in an area where water pooled after rain storms. To my surprise, they bloomed the same year. They are absolutely beautiful! The range of colors- yellow, orange, peach and pink - is fabulous, and the plants are vigorous. My neighbors all think they’re beautiful too. This winter I collected and planted the seed, and I’ve ordered three more plants in case my seed growing efforts fail.

North HIll Primroses

THIs is the third year I have had the North Hill Primroses. THis year they were a stunning display of flowers Some stalks had as many as 7 tall flower blooms. I live in Maryland where we do get cold winters. But because of all the enormous amount of rain we had, they really thrived. They are a wonderful addition to our garden.

I ordered four of the Erimures bulbs. One died, two struggled. One bloomed beautifully , so I hope at least one more will come up next spring.

You mailing are packed so well. THank you.

Candelabra Primulas Love Water!

Have grown them for 10 years planted a few feet from my water hydrant in full sun and clay based, compost added soil! They're fabulous and bloom for a long time. See pictures of them growing streamside? There's the clue! Mine thrive on the spills, overflows and dowsing from my hydrant. With full sun, fertilizer in many forms and my constant visits to the water source; they really put on a great show!! There location is perfect for me!

Spectacular in every way!

These primroses are some of the most beautiful that you will find anywhere in the world and so like White Flower Farms to collaborate with these two world famous and now deceased gardeners and preserve these special flowers for generations to come. Joe and Wayne had a fabulous hill at North Hill Gardens filled with these wonderful specimens and what a spectacular sight they were in early spring! And now, you can have them too!

Nothing to show for

I bought these last year and planted them according to the instructions. I placed them on the north side of my house next to some Primula Japonica that were really thriving for several years. They received a few hours of morning sun, rest of the day they were shaded. As the days went on they seemed to just shrivel away. They received enough water and they were definitely in a great spot. I wish I knew what happened to them because I really was looking forward to these as I loved the variety of color. I may order them this year and try again.

Latin Name Pronunciation: prim'yew-la

Plant all varieties except P. x pubescens in partial shade or shade; P. x pubescens grows best in full sun or partial shade here in Litchfield, CT. In cool coastal climates in the West, all Primroses can grow either in full sun or partial shade.

P. x bulleesiana will thrive in boggy soil. P. x pubescens demands good drainage and prefers to be kept on the dry side in summer. The other Primroses we offer require moisture-retentive soil that drains well but must not be allowed to dry out.

Slugs may chew holes in the leaves; see "least toxic control" for suggested remedies.
