Product Details

Each soft yellow bloom of Viola 'Etain' looks like it has been hand-painted with a lavender edge. The lightly scented flowers appear all summer, held well above clumps of bright green leaves. It's one of the prettiest Violets.

Viola is a valuable genus composed of more than 400 species of perennials from the world's temperate regions. There has been much hybridizing among species, resulting in many gradations of flower form and hardiness. The varieties offered here are reliably perennial for us. They prosper in full sun or partial shade (partial shade is always best in the South and the warmest reaches of Zones 9 and 10 in the West). Violas want even moisture and will tolerate quite damp soil.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

No luck with these

A viewer from Libertyville, IL

Planted 5 last year. Although they looked healthy enough when planted, only 2 survived.

Good plants but received in poor condition

A viewer from VA

These violas are very pretty and prolific bloomers but I am sad to say the ones I received were not well kept before they were shipped to me. If you don't cut violas back, they will get "leggy" and be a mass of mostly stems and leaves with fewer blooms. The nursery allowed that to happen with these. I cut them back after I planted them but now I have to wait a while for them to fill in the way I wanted. One of the plants also looks kinda unhealthy, so not sure it's going to make it.

Exquisite fragrance

A viewer from NY

My first true viola...it has bloomed in a container for the second consecutive year. It has remained small, but oh, the fragrance of those flowers. If you have ever smelled old-fashioned French violet perfume, or even those violet pastille candies--this is the fresh, natural version, with a haunting overlay of vanilla. Elusive and unforgettable.

Beautiful prolific bloomer

Stephanie from Northern NJ

I planted some in my raised bed last fall and they get full sun. They've thrived and look beautiful. This spring I planted some more in a planter that only gets a few hours of morning sun and they've also thrived. We've gotten so many compliments on how lovely and cheerful they look and I love the versatility of this flowering plant!

Viola Etain

Jess from Mid-west Ohio

I hate making a bad review but I ordered four of these last fall and planted them within two days of receiving them in the mail. When they arrived in the mail, I didn't think the plants looked very healthy, but they didn't look terribly unhealthy either, just very small and a little weak. I hoped planting them quickly would get them back in shape before it got too cold here in Ohio. The flowers never bloomed or seemed to get much healthier looking, but then it was fall and I assumed that they were just getting ready to go dormant for the winter. I know it's only May, but I think if any would have survived they would be coming up by now, just very disappointing. I have ordered many, and I do mean MANY flowers from white flower farms and this is my first real disappointment. Not sure what happened to these flowers but I cannot recommend. Hope others have better luck than I did.

Latin Name Pronunciation: vie-oh'luh

Plant Violas in full sun or partial shade (partial shade is always best in the South and in warm inland areas of the West). Violets generally require moisture-retentive soil, the exception being V. pedata varities, which demand well-drained, acid soil.
