Product Details

This collection of small, evergreen shrubs, known botanically as Erica (Heath) and Calluna (Heather), provide a display of color in every season. Flowers range from single to double, from snow-white to crimson, and the foliage varies from deep green through yellow and golden tones to reddish winter tints, with gray shades thrown in for good measure.

The plants we select provide either bloom or colored foliage every month of the year. In very cold winters, the winter-blooming kinds will not show until early spring. 6 plants, each labeled. 20–25 sq ft.

Heaths and Heathers prefer full sun and well-drained, acidic soil (some gravel or peat moss dug into the soil before planting will do the job), and they need protection from cold winter winds. They are ill-suited to growing conditions in the South and the desert Southwest.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

A bit of Scotland in Minnesota

I bought this package 3 years ago. They are not technically hardy in MN zone but I cover them thoroughly every winter and they all have been lovely for me and come to life every spring. I have them in my fairy garden, West side close to my house so they have some protection. My heart is in Scotland every time I see them.

Bad investment.

These arrived packaged well, but badly rootbound. I planted them immediately in rich, organic soil with a good amount of peat mixed in. The pretty little flowers they came with have fallen off, and left behind dry, woody little things. I'll keep caring for them, but I fully expect to replace them next year.

I really should have shopped locally for plants, but WFF was so highly recommended by my mother in law. Her experience was up West Virginia, though. I don't seem to be having much luck with their products down here in North Carolina.

CULTURE: Grow Heaths and Heathers in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun).  Soil should be well-drained and somewhat acidic.  Add about an inch of peat moss as a top-dressing each spring—no further fertilizing needed. Heaths and Heathers do not do well in hot, humid areas; they are natives of the cool, open moors of northern Europe for the most part.

WINTER PROTECTION: In colder areas, cover plants with pine or other evergreen boughs for winter protection, or spray with anti-desiccant.

GROWTH: Heaths and Heathers are slow growers; their progress is usually measured in inches per year, depending on the kind of growing season and the culture; they usually take 2–3 years to get to mature size and to bloom.
