A partial shade situation is a great opportunity to play with textures and foliage patterns. For our Five for the Shade collection, we've chosen three Coleus varieties whose jewel-like leaves complement each other. For fresh, all-summer bloom and glossy green leaves, we've tucked in two Begonias that will spill gracefully over the edges of the container. 5 plants total, one each of the plants listed below. Container not included.

  • Coleus 'Tobasco'
  • Coleus Lava™ Rose
  • Coleus 'Garnet Robe'
  • Begonia Dragon Wing® Pink
  • Begonia BabyWing® White

Some plants require more space in container gardens than others. To accommodate the 5 plants in this collection, we recommend a container at least 18″ in diameter and 12″ deep.

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Easy, Pretty, Blooms on and On!

I was so impressed by this container garden collection that I’m ordering it again for 2022. This planting elicited praise from the mailman, my mother in law, delivery drivers, our arborist - just universal delight! The coleus plants were very vibrant, and to my surprise they all produced delicate purple flowers in late summer. I had no idea coleus would do that! These plants arrived in mixed condition; I was not sure the begonias would make it. But after a little TLC, all of the plants thrived through Thanksgiving! I live in zone 6B/southwestern Connecticut about 200 ft above sea level, FYI. The plants were placed in a vintage cement urn with good drainage, Northeast exposure. Bright morning sun, shade by 11 am til sundown. Give it a good home and it will give you an easy care, delightful garden!

Five for the Shade Annual Collection

We put these in a round planter on our front stoop and with the exception of the strawberry drop coleus, it has spread beautifully and filled out the container with lots of color.

Stunning Collection

WWF's photo doesn't do this collection justice. I purchased this for the first time, and it exceeded my expectations. I planted it on the east side of my house, so it got some morning sun. It grew rapidly and became quite large. The stark contrast between the dark red coleus and the white and pink begonias is what impresses the most. It's quite stunning and elegant. It got so many compliments. I will definitely order Five for the Shade again next year. (Personally, I think WWF should give this beauty a more elegant name.)

I grew this collection last year in an East-facing window box, under mature trees. The Coleus 'Tobasco' didn't survive even after having a replacement sent, but once the other plants were established and thriving it was not missed. Quality plants made for a lovely display that lasted well into the fall.

Lovely. The best.

Wonderful collection! I bought three of these, and "filled them in" with similar annuals from the local hardware store. The White Flower Farm plants are so much more robust and beautiful! These are gorgeous, sturdy, plants!

Choosing a pot and growing mix: In addition to our Annual Collections, most of the plants we offer can be grown, either singly or in combination, in containers. Any container with a drainage hole in the bottom will suit. The growing medium in containers must drain much more quickly than garden soil.

Planting: Begin by adding potting mix to the container until the container is about 3/4 full. (If you use a dry, peat-moss-based mix, you must first moisten it by placing it in a plastic tub or a wheelbarrow and slowly adding water until the mix is moist but not soggy.) Next, set the plants on the mix one by one, spacing them much more closely than you would when planting them in the ground. Put the tallest plants in the center of the container. Surround them with the shorter, mounding plants, and put trailing plants along the edge. When you are pleased with your arrangement, add potting mix to bring the level to within an inch or so of the container's rim and firm lightly. Finally, water thoroughly.

Container care: Plants in containers need special care. They dry out more quickly than plants in the ground; in the heat of summer, you may have to water them daily. Because of the need for frequent watering, nutrients soon wash out the bottom of the pot. To keep annuals growing and flowering, we suggest you water with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer mixed as directed, every other week in summer. (Other plants—bulbs, perennials, and shrubs—need less fertilizer; a half-strength solution applied once a month through August is enough.) Our Vermont Compost Plus is a mix of 10 ingredients, organic and mineral, that will revitalize last year's potting soil and slowly release nutrients throughout the season. All-Bloom Fertilizer is a 15-30-15 product that can be diluted in water and applied regularly during the growing season. Finally, to look their best, all plants in containers need regular grooming. Remove spent flowers regularly and prune vigorous growers to keep them in check.

Preparing for winter: In climates where winter temperatures drop well below freezing, containers should generally be dismantled in fall. Bring tender plants indoors or toss them on the compost heap; plant hardy bulbs, perennials, and shrubs in the ground. Most containers should be emptied of potting mix and stored under cover; only plastic and fiberglass pots can be left out over winter without cracking. In mild-winter climates—say, Zone 8 (10°F) and warmer—hardy plants can generally be left outdoors in containers with little risk either to the plants or to the pots.
