Colchicum

The large blooms of Colchicums rise without warning and glisten in the sharp autumn light. In spring, a clump of deer-proof leaves emerges, then vanishes by midsummer. These fall-blooming bulbs prefer well-drained soil that doesn't dry out in summer, and need shade where summers are hot.
