Product Details
The striking contrast of glowing pearly shell flowers against nearly black leaves makes this tall Penstemon 'Onyx and Pearls' visually remarkable. Stoic cold hardiness and heat/humidity tolerance render this plant a garden essential. PP 32,613
Penstemon is a very large genus of herbaceous perennials, most native to North America. Their colorful, tubular flowers are borne in profusion close to the stems and the nectar is relished by hummingbirds. Most species require well-drained or very well-drained soil and full sun.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP
We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Grew Well But Not a Great Flowering Time
A viewer from Connecticut
The plant is healthy, the blooms were healthy but I suspect I'll be reading up on penstemon this winter to figure out how to make sure these guys reach their full potential. Having said that, they've only been in the ground one season and I have noticed that some plants take establishment over 2-3 seasons to reach their true form. This is not a complaint, just an observation. A very healthy plant was sent, so I really think this is a "first blooming season" issue.

Grow in well-drained soil in full sun. Cut back hard after flowering. We find Beard Tongue grows more vigorously and reblooms more reliably if spent flowers are removed promptly.
