Growing Deschampsia
Latin Name Pronunciation: deh-shamp' see-uh
Commonly known as Tufted Hairgrass, Deschampsia is a genus of cool-season Grasses native to temperate parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. The perennial species are known for their durability and long-lasting presence in landscapes.

Plant the crown just at soil level, or slightly above if you will be adding mulch. Spacing is indicated on the plant tag.Light: Sun to part shade; more abundant flowering in full sun and northern latitudes.
Watering: Moderate; keep evenly moist. Requires more water when planted in full sun.
Fertilizer: Grasses do not generally require fertilizer. Mulch lightly, if at all.
Soil: Prefers moist, loamy soil but tolerant of clay and sandy soils that are not excessively dry.
Pests/Diseases: Generally pest- and disease-free.
Dividing/Transplanting: Plants may be divided or transplanted in early spring or fall.
End-of-Season Care: This evergreen or semi-evergreen needs very little care and need not be cut back. New growth will emerge through old foliage in early spring. Fragile, dried bloom stems may break with snow and wind; just rake them out by hand. In late winter, use fingers to loosen and remove leaves or mulch that may have collected in these tufted clumps.
