Product Details

A member of the showy Ladyslippers® series of Cape Primroses (Streptocarpus) noted for their abundant flowers and number of leaves per plant, ‘Blue Ice’ bears lovely blooms in a pretty shade of light blue detailed with darker veins. In winter, enjoy the show indoors. In summer, take the display outside on a shady porch or deck. Shipped in a 5" gray metal cachepot.

An African Violet relative, Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus) grows in the mountainous, wooded ravines of South Africa, shaded from the heat and intensity of the sun. It's an easy-to-care-for houseplant in bright but indirect light. Water when the soil feels slightly dry and fertilize twice a month for a long display of open-faced blooms and dark green, strap-shaped leaves.

WEATHER PERMITTING - Working with Mother Nature

In our business, we work closely with Mother Nature. In the colder months when we stipulate that an item is shipped “weather permitting”, that means temperatures outside our shipping facility in northwestern Connecticut and along the shipping route must be warm enough for tender plants to survive in unheated delivery trucks. Our practice of waiting for windows of milder weather may result in the occasional delay, but our customers tend to appreciate the care we take to make certain their plants arrive in the very best possible condition. Questions? Don’t hesitate to call our customer service staff at 1-800-411-6159.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Beautiful and unique house plant!

I received my 'Blue Ice' from White Flower Farm in November 2017 in great condition. Not only has the original plant been with me for over 5 years, I have also successfully divided and propagated with its leaves and got several offspring plants. I now have four pots sitting on my bow window. They flower almost non-stop throughout the year, even with some sporadic blooms during winter time. The bloom is of a true blue color that's rare and simply stunning. I love this plant and would recommend it to anyone looking for house plants which are safe for cats and dogs. With all these praises, I would be remiss not to mention the one thing that I've learned with streptocarpuses (cape primroses). They are very particular with their ambient lighting. If you find yours seeming to be struggling, move it to a different location. I have my four pots on a north/north east facing window, and they are simply thriving!

Gorgeous!

This plant arrived less than a week ago. with a mere full buds; it's now full of life and blooming like crazy! A seemingly very easy plant to care of too...a simple watering when the soil is dry and bright, inditect light you're good to go.

Bad Shipping

I was so excited to get my first house plant from White Flower Farm. I searched the store to pick the perfect addition to my home only to be disappointed when it arrived looking like a dead plant that had been run over before it was shipped.

Hopefully, I can nurse it back to some resemblance of a healthy plant again. Even my roommate looked at it and commented "oh my goodness is it dead"

And to think I have sent people gifts from this company, I am embarrassed to think that this is how my gifts may have arrived at their door.

Latin Name Pronunciation: strep-toe-kar'puss

LIGHT: The Cape Primrose is a relative of African Violets and prefers the same growing conditions of bright but indirect light. Avoid hot sun, which can burn the leaves and fade the flowers.

TEMPERATURE: Day and night temperatures of 60-75 degrees F are fine year round.

WATERING: Water only when the top inch of the potting mix is dry to the touch. Providing water too frequently will cause the roots, leaves, and base of the plant to rot. If the leaves look wilted even when the soil is moist, you may be overwatering. Let the top inch of the potting mix dry out before watering again. Plants require less water during the winter months (November through February).

FERTILIZER: From spring through fall, apply a water-soluble fertilizer that is high in phosphorus (such as 15-30-15) every 3 weeks. Withhold fertilizer during the winter months, when your plant will stop growing actively and rest.

CONTINUING CARE: Use scissors to cut off the stalks of faded flowers. The tips of older leaves become dry as they age, and these too may be trimmed off. Repot your plant into a slightly larger pot in spring.
