Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost'

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' is most at home in woodlands or along a shady stream bed, where it will form a lush understory of quiet beauty. One of its common names, False Forget-me-not, refers to the intense azure flowers. 'Jack Frost' is a standout variety with silvery leaves veined and outlined in green. The plants grow to 12" tall and as wide, topped in May and June by clusters of blue flowers. Perfect as an accent in a shaded border with Hostas and Ferns, or as a drift in a woodland.

The genus Brunnera contains three species of perennials in the Borage family. Native to the woodlands of Eastern Europe and Northwest Asia, all are characterized by green basal foliage and sprays of small blue flowers resembling their Forget-me-not cousins. Brunnera macrophylla (Siberian Bugloss) and its variegated cultivars are frequently grown in ornamental gardens. Like many relatives, notably Borage and Comfrey, its beautifully formed, heart-shaped leaves also have a rough, hairy texture that is unappealing to herbivores. Siberian Bugloss thrives in cool, shady woodland situations with moist soil that is rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of clay but does not tolerate dry soil or hot humid summers.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery. 

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email. 

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment. 

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

Brunnera generally thrive in cool shady woodland situations with moist soil rich in organic matter; they do not tolerate dry soil or hot humid summers. Heart-shaped, softly hairy leaves beautifully set off sprays of sparkling blue Forget-me-not flowers in spring. This shade lover makes a well-behaved but effective ground cover in evenly moist, well-drained soil. Brunnera is most at home in woodlands or along a shady streambed, where it will form a lush under story of quiet beauty.

Light/Watering: Prefers partial shade or shade; tolerates dry shade but needs moisture in sunny conditions. Variegated forms require moist soil and will scorch in sun. Leaves will turn brown and crisp with too much sun or too little water but if cut back and watered well plants often recover.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Grow in well-drained soil that is moderately fertile and humus-rich. We do not recommend fertilizing at planting time or during the first growing season.

Pests/Diseases: Tough and relatively trouble-free.

Companions: Daffodils and other woodland plants.

Dividing/Transplanting: Divide in spring; plant crown at soil level.

End-of-Season Care: Keep old foliage over winter to protect crowns. After the ground freezes, apply a loose layer of oak leaves, pine boughs, or straw.

Calendar of Care

Early Spring: Gradually remove winter cover. Cut back old foliage; large clumps may be divided.

Summer: Remove any green foliage that appears on variegated forms.
