Product Details

Hostas are categorically the finest ground cover for shade and one of the loveliest and most popular elements for designing a long-term and carefree garden. But top-quality Hostas have been painfully expensive for as long as we can remember, putting large plantings out of reach for those with limited budgets. We've solved the problem by offering our Emerald Isle Hosta collection of 4 excellent varieties, 5 plants of each, at a very attractive price. It's the building block from which you can create your own Emerald Isle. Plants are vigorous and healthy and will take hold quickly. 20 plants. Each variety labeled. They will cover approximately 55–60 sq ft. Exclusive.

This genus of shade lovers has 70 species, all of them from China and Japan, and hybridizers have produced hundreds of exciting crosses. Hostas have many handsome leaf colorations and lavender or white Lily-like flowers on graceful stalks. Plants prefer a moist location, but we've had a mass planting thrive for more than 30 years under a row of Sugar Maples. (In the South and West, evenly moist soil is required.) Because Hostas are grown primarily for their foliage, we give the height of the leaves, not the flowers.

Shipping Info

We want our customers to receive strong, healthy plants that are ready to thrive in their gardens and homes. Here's what we'd like you to know about our shipping practices.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

Growing Guide

Planting: Choose a site with evenly moist soil (Hostas will endure dry shade in all but the hottest, driest parts of North America if watered regularly until they become established). Emerald Isle requires about 55-60 square feet of space; the miniature varieties in Emerald Atoll take up about 18 square feet. Use a shovel or spade to loosen the planting bed soil to a depth of 10-12 inches and turn in a 3-4 inch layer of organic matter, such as compost, aged manure, leafmold, or peat moss. Then open the bags to get an idea of the size of the roots. With a trowel, dig the planting holes, spacing them according to the suggestions provided with your order. Set the roots in the holes with the larger varieties in back, shorter varieties in front--the heights and spacings of the varieties are provided in the package. Hold the buds (the pointed growing tips) 1 inch below the surface of the soil. then push soil back into the holes to cover the roots, firm the soil, and water thoroughly. Do not fertilize the first season. The following spring, use a balanced, granular fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, at the rate on the manufacturer's label.

Please note: Bareroot plants dry out quickly once they are removed from their packaging. We strongly recommend that you keep the roots covered with packing material until you are ready to plant.

Care: Hostas are about as carefree as a plant can get. It's possible to plant them and forget them, but for best performance, we recommend that you fertilize them each spring, remove the flower stalks below the level of the leaves after the blooms have faded, and cut the foliage to the ground after hard frost in the fall. The Achilles heel of Hostas is slugs. Set out shallow bowls of beer to keep the population in check, put down diatomaceous earth as a barrier, or (in the South) mulch with prickly Zoysia grass lawn clippings.

Peerless plants

"This is a very good deal. Second time buying over five years. 2020 version are large, healthy, striking. Potted up the 2025 model for a few weeks and every single hosta is leafing out. Even with the higher shipping, this is an incredible deal; no weak “filler” plants. If you want the shady, sophisticated look, get this collection."

Emerald Isle never disappoints!

"This is the third Emerald aisle collection I’ve ordered over the last 30+ years. When we move from our first house, I dug up every single plant and took it with me. And then ordered more! I wasn’t feeling quite as industrious this time so I purchased a collection for the new house. I’m certain I’ll need more next year, but will wait to see how these fill in. In terms of quality, wow! Healthy, voluminous root systems. I always pop mine in a pot with some potting soil, which allows them to leaf out in the pot. Gives me a better idea of how they’re gonna look when placed in the landscape and allows me to switch them up until I get the look I want. I swear they sprouted leaves within days… very pleased."

Best Garden Decision Ever

"I had a shady spot, covered in Vinca and roots where almost nothing would grow. Digging was close to impossible. I bought this collection several years ago and they’re more beautiful every year. Lush and they doin’t seem to mind the Vinca or the roots. I confess that I do absolutely nothing to them."

Thirsty buggers

"While I've grown Hostas for years, this was my first experience in planting them bare root. I set them out last Fall; all but one emerged this Spring. Although comeback was excellent, the plants languished, even by drowsy first-year perennial standards. They didn't appear unwell, just arrested. I bemoaned this fact to a local nurseryman. He suggested I water more generously. Seemed too easy, but I took his advice and increased hydration beyond that which I typically offer young Hostas. Within two weeks I noted happy change. The plants are now thriving. Some are even blooming! The hummingbirds and I are all smiles!"

Beautiful healthy plants

"I planted this collection late last summer about this time. All the bulbs grew to a good size this year and I know they'll likely double by next year. This bed was planted as a memorial garden to my doggie that passed last year under a river birch, which was his favorite place in the yard. It's a beautiful collection. You can't go wrong with this!"

Excellent Value

"Received 5 each of 4 varieties as advertised. Very well packed with all roots happy upon arrival. I would say that 16 out of 20 have thrived with a few (all the same variety) that grew a little and then died. Maybe they will come through next year. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend."

Nice healthy plants

"Just received my order of 3 sets of this collection and started planting them last night. The roots are BIG and very healthy. Well packed in damp shredded paper and marked by variety. My only complaint is that I got only 3 varieties instead of 4 as listed in the description. Not a big deal, since I'm so happy with the quality of the roots. Looking forward to seeing all my new hosta pop up!"

Wonderful Collection

"I planted one of these collections over 22 years ago. Hostas everywhere! We've transplanted them all over the property, and moved some to another. A great buy!"

Emeral Isle Collection

"I ordered three Emerald Isle Collection last spring and they look terrific next to my Pole Building. I ordered another nine collections for my driveway this spring and they all came up and look good for a first year plant. I will be ordering another seven Emerald Isle Collections for the north side of my driveway for a fall planting. We visited the Nursery this summer and were very impressed with the staff and the surroundings at Litchfield. Good product, fair price, excellent care in packaging and product delivery. We are happy customers."

My 2nd order of Emerald Isle

"I loved the variety and QUALITY of my 1st order of Emerald Isle, and even learned how to defeat the deer (sprayed them one year with a bitter pet repellent spray, the deer never came back to them.) Large, quality root stock, they took off the first year, and now 3 years later are lush and full and gorgeous. So I'm back for more to use in a new area. Just be sure to keep the label that tells you which color coded package has which variety. I lost mine and had to call, it wasn't on the website."
