Product Details

The Monarda 'Raspberry Wine' flowers are wine red and irresistible to hummingbirds. Plants bloom long and hard and show excellent resistance to powdery mildew. A White Flower Farm introduction in 1992.

Monarda is a North American genus that has several species, all of which share tartly fragrant foliage and square stems that typify members of the Mint family. The flower heads are hemispheres of tubular blooms in brilliant colors that present a feast of nectar for pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in mid- to late-summer. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and evenly moist soil. Under these conditions, they will gladly fill any available space but are easily pulled where unwanted and transplant readily.

Shipping Info

We want our customers to receive strong, healthy plants that are ready to thrive in their gardens and homes. Here's what we'd like you to know about our shipping practices.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery.

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

Growing Guide

Latin Name Pronunciation: mo-nar' duh

Monarda is a North American genus that has several species, all of which share tartly fragrant foliage and square stems that typify members of the Mint family. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and evenly moist soil. Under these conditions, they will gladly fill any available space but are easily pulled where unwanted and transplant readily.

  • Choose a location in full sun or partial shade with moisture-retentive soil. In dry conditions, Bee Balm is susceptible to powdery mildew.
  • For potted varieties, plant the crown at soil level. For bareroot varieties, plant with the old stems pointing up. Fan out the runners horizontally and cover them with just ¼" of soil.
  • Mulch plants in spring and irrigate during summer dry spells. Plants spread rapidly. Divide every year or two in spring to keep them in check.

Disappointed

"Very tiny plant for the price. I wish I could upload a photo."

Wow!

"I purchased this bee balm last year. It disappeared in a few days, I thought perhaps deer came by and tried it out. This year it emerged HUGE! Healthy, giant plants that are adding excitement to the garden; hummers, bees, people. I am going to transplant some to the side yard, spreading out this color across the property. I am new to this plant, it’s a great new addition to the flower bed."

Highly invasive

"It has taken me two years to get this plant out of my garden. It’s very invasive. It’s the first time I have ended up with an invasive plant and it’s been a burdensome experience. I still see pockets of it emerging occasionally and I take immediate action. It will be great to be free of it."

My Favorite!

"Planted in Spring 2021 in a full sun area. Came up easily and bloomed profusely around June/July. Attracted tons of pollinators, including hummingbirds and even a hummingbird moth! Ordering more for other areas."

Pollinator party

"One year after planting this is over four feet tall and it is party central for local pollinators. We now get daily visits from a hummingbird, and I have seen every type of bee—bumbles and honeybees and natives. Butterflies, even a couple visits from a hummingbird moth! Right now on a sunny afternoon there must be at least two dozen bees feeding. I have a garden full of ornamental flowers but this one is the top hit. Hasn’t needed staking yet or really much attention at all. Highly recommended."

Third Year was the charm

"Planted these in 2019. Hardly any blooms but the leaves and stems proliferated throughout the flower bed and needed to be thinned out. This year, the stalks have grown to over 6’ tall and the flowers are gorgeous!"

Disappointed

"Bought this based on all the great reviews and planted it in the front year. Unfortunately, there were no flowers the first season. The plant is extremely invasive and stems needed support to keep them upright. it was moved to another location in the back yard."

Hummingbirds love this and so do I!

"Bigger and better in 2nd and 3rd years! I have several varieties of bee balm, but this color is my fave! Pollinators and hummingbirds attracted to it, and it looks so unique and interesting in the garden. They grew much taller than I anticipated the 2nd year, so I think I will have to relocate towards the middle or back of the garden. They are showstoppers though and will shine anywhere. We had a lot of humidity and rain in mid summer and I lost all of my monarda to powdery mildew. I cut this variety to the ground and it came right back a few weeks later! For furture reference, during periods of high humidity I would suggest spraying them weekly with neem oil or baking soda mixture. They're worth the extra effort for the joy they provide."

Solid Performer

"I have had this Bee Balm for several years. It is a reliable performer and I love the color. The Hummingbirds and Butterflies love it as well. I have several varieties of Bee Balm in my flower garden and this is the backbone of the garden. I highly recommend it."

Happy and Sad

"I planted two of these in the fall of 2018. This spring, one is growing like gangbusters. The other one, sadly, is not growing at all. I'm thinking about buying another one and trying again."
