Product Details

Yellow Foxglove (known interchangeably as Digitalis grandiflora and Digitalis ambigua) is the longest-lived perennial in this popular genus. The soft yellow flowers appear in June and, if cut back after the initial show, they may flower again in September. This shade blends with both hot colors and cool.

The genus Digitalis comes from southern Europe and has some 20 species, mostly perennials. They grow either in sun or partial shade, which makes them ideal plants for woodland gardens. Some are biennial, and even the perennial forms tend to be short-lived, but their extravagant flowering more than compensates for this, and many will reseed themselves. Foxgloves are of easy culture and make excellent cut flowers if picked when the blooms are half open. But their real strength is as dramatic and richly colored vertical accents, a look that is impossible to duplicate with another genus.

Shipping Info

We want our customers to receive strong, healthy plants that are ready to thrive in their gardens and homes. Here's what we'd like you to know about our shipping practices.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery.

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

Growing Guide

Latin Name Pronunciation: dih-jih-tay'liss

Grow Digitalis in soil enriched with organic matter. Afternoon shade is required in the South and warm inland areas of the West. Remove spent flower spikes to promote rebloom; but leave a few on D. purpurea varieties, which are biennials, to allow them to self-sow. Foliage tends to be evergreen; do not cut back in fall. Prune off winter-damaged leaves in spring.

Wow...very impressed

"Just received my shipment of 6 Digitalis Grandiflora. Wow wow wow. I have ordered a LOT of plants online but never received plants that were so well packed (the cardboard collar on each kept the soil from spilling out of the plants and into the packing box). Also the plants were all in fantastic condition...probably due to the wonderful packing. Nice and lush and green....didn't look like they had just been in a box for a couple of days. Will definitely order from White Flower Farm again. VERY happy customer."

Very reliable bloomer, reseeds itself

"I bought a plant over a decade ago. This is a very reliable plant, very pale yellow. It reseeds itself in my sandy loam Zone 5 garden. Every so often I need to edit them a bit."

Lovely soft yellow, graceful

"I use these in the garden area I sit in at the end of the day for some peace and quiet. They are beautiful."

Amazing color

"Had good growth and color in the first season. Added color to the shade garden, especially later in the season ."

Disappoining

"a disappointing purchase"

Lovely, reliable accent

"I bought two several years ago and placed them at the edge of a shaded area where they get morning sun. They lay low all year in flat green clumps, then throw up 18" arches of bloom each spring in zone 7b. The two plants are now two clumps of maybe three plants each, and nowhere near needing division. I don't deadhead, in hopes of getting seedlings, but I've read a second bloom is possible if you do. They add elegance to the garden. Love them!"

Don’t order if you’re expecting timely shipping

"I ordered a bunch of plants, including these foxgloves, back in July for fall delivery. I should have known better as it’s the third time that I’ve ordered for fall delivery from this company and received the order late. When I ordered, the website said they would ship in mid-September for Zone 6. Well, they ended up shipping in mid-October. We’ve already had the first frost of the year, kind of pointless planting these now. Every time White Flower Farm ships an order late there’s a different excuse - this time it was because they migrated to a new ordering system. Timely shipping times matters for a gardening company! (I’m still waiting for the rest of my order)."
