Product Details

Product Details

Native to the southeastern US, Fothergilla gardenii is a compact shrub whose fuzzy little bottlebrush flowers are actually composed entirely of stamens and have no petals. The springtime bloom is faintly honey-scented, and is followed by attractive foliage that turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn. While plants can tolerate some shade, they produce more flowers and far more fall color in full sun. It’s a fine plant for 3 seasons of interest in the mixed border.

Fothergilla, a genus in the Witch Hazel family, offers some outstanding deciduous shrubs that are not as widely known or planted as they deserve to be. There are only two species, F. major and F. gardenii, both commonly found in southeastern North America. They thrive in moist, acid, organic soil, and bloom profusely in full sun. Their rounded, dense shape is mirrored by rounded, deep green—sometimes blue-green—foliage that in fall turns yellow, orange, and red, often all on the same plant.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Latin Name Pronunciation: fah-ther-gill'-ah

White bottle brush flowers in May with a sweet honey fragrance. Rich blue-green foliage turns brilliant orange-yellow in fall. Rounded, dense shape; more upright habit of growth than some other Fothergillas. Good in foundation plantings and mixed shrub borders.

CULTURE: Full sun/part shade; moist, well-drained acid soil rich in organic matter. Space 5ft apart. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Seldom any problems with diseases or pests. It does tend to sucker somewhat freely. Needs minimal pruning in late winter or early spring; just remove broken or weak shoots, and any crossing branches to maintain an open framework.
