Collaboration for Part Shade for the North - Daffodils & Hosta

Do you have an area that receives sun in the spring but becomes shady later on when deciduous trees unfurl their leaves, or do you have a garden that faces east and only receives morning light? If so, it’s a perfect spot to grow Daffodils and Hostas together. In the fall, we’ll ship 100 bulbs of The Works Daffodils for the North and 20 bareroot plants of our Emerald Isle Hosta Collection. One collection covers about 55–60 sq ft.

The Works is a mixture of 30 top-quality varieties blended to provide the widest possible range of color, form, and bloom time. Among the assortment are colorful Trumpets, hardy Large-cups, ruffled Split-cups, as well as dainty and fragrant Tazettas and Cyclamineus varieties. Planted at the edge of a woodland or along a path, The Works is ideal for naturalizing. In smaller yards, the bulbs can be sprinkled throughout garden beds and planted alongside the mailbox and front door. They settle in quickly, bloom beautifully their first year, and then increase their numbers in the kind of sunny, well-drained site they like. This mix provides a permanent display that is immune to pests and the weather, and will never be touched by deer. Best of all, these large bulbs are easy to grow and require little maintenance. The Emerald Isle Hosta collection offers 20 bareroot plants, five each of four varieties that collectively comprise the deep colors, smooth textures, and elegant traceries found in the best Hostas. In shade or partial shade, and practically any soil, these rugged plants will prosper formidably and create a summer oasis.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery. 

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email. 

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.
