Dracaena is a varied genus of trees and succulent shrubs in the Asparagus family originating in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, northern Australia, and Central America. All former Sansevieria species are now known as Dracaena, the best-known of which is the Snake Plant, still often affectionately referred to as Sansevieria. Most of the Dracaena species from moist regions, such as D. fragrans (Corn Plant), D. reflexa (Song of India), and D. marginata (Dragon Tree), feature thin, flexible, strappy leaves which are often boldly and attractively variegated. In contrast, species adapted to arid environments, such as D. masoniana (Shark Fin), and D. trifasciata (Snake Plant), feature stiff, sword-shaped leaves (often thickened or cylindrical) which are used for water storage, making them drought-tolerant. Durable, low-maintenance Dracaenas are popular houseplants, widely promoted for their air-purifying qualities. The leaves of all Dracaena species contain saponins, compounds that are toxic to dogs, cats, and other pets if ingested. While they may cause irritation, they are considered non-toxic to humans.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment. 

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

Dracaena is a varied genus of trees and succulent shrubs originating in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, northern Australia, and Central America. Leaves contain saponins, compounds that are toxic to dogs and cats. Keep plants out of reach of any pets. If accidentally ingested, Draceana Plants can cause vomiting, excessive salivation, loss of appetite, depression, and dilated pupils.

Light: Draceanas do best in medium to bright, indirect or filtered light, or morning light from an east-facing window. Although they will tolerate lower light levels, such as near a north-facing window, they will reach their best potential in brighter situations.

Watering: Evenly moist soil is best during the growing season, ensuring that the root ball does not dry out. In winter when your Dracaena is not actively growing, water only when soil feels dry to the touch 1" down, using tepid water and always making sure that excess water does not sit inside the saucer or cachepot.

Temperature: This adaptable plant does fine in typical, daytime household temperatures (65-75°F), and prefers no cooler than 55°F at night.

Fertilizer: Apply a balanced (18-18-18), water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (generally April into September). Do not fertilize in winter.

Humidity: Moderate humidity is beneficial; leaf tips may turn brown if air is too dry. Keep away from radiators and vents that blow dry air from heating or air conditioning systems. Mist a few times a week to increase humidity, or set plants on top of pebbles in a tray with water (water level should be just below pebbles to prevent saturating soil in the pot), or run a humidifier nearby. Occasionally wiping leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust is beneficial.
