Hylotelephium telephium Autumn Joy

Hylotelephium Autumn Joy (formerly classified as Sedum Autumn Joy) is one of the highlights of the late-season garden. Its leaves are blue green, thick, and succulent. Its flowers, which begin to open in August on 18–24" stems, start rosy pink, deepen to salmon, then to rust, and finally turn rich brown in an evolution that takes place over many weeks. The blooms are long lasting in a vase and are superb dried, whether brought indoors or left standing in the garden to catch light snowfalls. We can't imagine a border without Autumn Joy. Combine with Russian Sage and Black-eyed Susan for a long-blooming finale for the season. 'Herbstfreude'

The genus Hylotelephium, previously classified as Sedum, consists of over 30 species of herbaceous perennials known for their succulent foliage and clusters of star-shaped flowers. These plants are native to regions in Asia, Europe, and North America, and they are commonly referred to as Stonecrop due to their frequent appearance on rocky terrains. Hylotelephium species are popular in gardens for their drought tolerance, low maintenance, and ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. They are typically used in rock gardens, borders, and as ground cover, thriving in well-drained soils and full sun​.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery. 

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email. 

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Sedums and Hylotelephiums are succulent plants known for their drought tolerance and ease of care, often found in rock gardens and borders. Commonly called Stonecrop, both typically have thick, fleshy leaves and produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers; they thrive in well-drained soils and full sun​. Hylotelephiums, previously classified under Sedum, include species like Autumn Joy. Both genera are excellent for attracting pollinators, with their flowers providing a valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies.

Upright forms: Plant in full sun (or partial shade in the South) in average, well-drained soil. The dried flower heads of many varieties remain attractive in winter, whether left standing in the garden or brought indoors. Mature plants may require staking. Plants will be more compact if the tips of new spring growth are pinched back by ⅓ when the stems are 4–6" tall.

Low-growing forms: These colorful, vigorous, but well-behaved ground covers are perfect for decorating openings between stones in a path or wall, and invaluable for rock gardens and troughs. They have the same growing needs as the upright forms, thriving with little care and moisture.
