Product Details

The multitude of orange blossoms on this easy-care Holiday Cactus bring a warm glow to your holidays. The plant looks particularly splendid nestled in a copper-toned metal cachepot. Great for decorating and gifting. Plants arrive fully budded and ready to bloom. Shipped in a 6½" wide x 5¼" tall copper-toned metal cachepot.

Please note: This is a different species than the true Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera x buckleyi).

Holiday Cactus, blooming around traditional winter celebrations in the Northern Hemisphere, are true cacti—succulent perennial plants that store water in their flattened stems (they have no leaves). Schlumbergera is a genus of just a few species and many hybrids, growing not in the desert, but rather, epiphytically on trees and rock outcrops in the shade of jungles on cool coastal Brazilian mountainsides. S. truncata, with pointy stem segments resembling lobster claws, is the Thanksgiving Cactus. The true Christmas Cactus (S. x buckleyi), with scallop-edged stems, is an 1840’s hybrid between S. truncata and S. russelliana. Countless hybrids between the two expand the range of flower color and bloom time. Clusters of tubular flowers emerge from buds that form when triggered by cool nights and short days. Their native habitat makes plants well-adapted to low light levels indoors.

Shipping Info
Weather Permitting

In our business, we work closely with Mother Nature. In the colder months when we stipulate that an item is shipped “weather permitting”, that means temperatures outside our shipping facility in northwestern Connecticut and along the shipping route must be warm enough for tender plants to survive in unheated delivery trucks. Our practice of waiting for windows of milder weather may result in the occasional delay, but our customers tend to appreciate the care we take to make certain their plants arrive in the very best possible condition. Questions? Don’t hesitate to call our customer service staff at 1-800-411-6159.

We want our customers to receive strong, healthy plants that are ready to thrive in their gardens and homes. Here's what we'd like you to know about our shipping practices.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery.

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

Growing Guide

Latin Name Pronunciation: shlum-bur' ger-ah

Holiday Cactus, blooming around traditional winter celebrations in the Northern Hemisphere, are true cacti—succulent perennial plants that store water in their flattened stems (they have no leaves). Schlumbergera is a genus of just a few species and many hybrids, growing not in the desert, but rather, epiphytically on trees and rock outcrops in the shade of jungles on cool coastal Brazilian mountainsides. S. truncata, with pointy stem segments resembling lobster claws, is the Thanksgiving Cactus. Clusters of tubular flowers emerge from buds that form when triggered by cool nights and short days. Their native habitat makes plants well-adapted to low light levels indoors.

Also known as the Thanksgiving Cactus (or Crab Cactus, Lobster Cactus), this easy-to-care for plant is native to rainforests of Brazil, where it grows on rocks or in trees in light shade. It's an easy houseplant and can spend the warmer months of the year outside.

LIGHT: Provide partial shade or bright indirect light. During the winter months, when the sun is not as strong, more sunlight is acceptable. Too much sun can burn the leaves or turn them yellow.

WATERING: Water when the potting mix is dry 1 inch below the surface. Avoid over watering (which will cause the roots to rot) or letting the potting mix dry out completely. Provide less water from fall through spring.

TEMPERATURE: When plants are in active growth (April to September), provide temperatures between 60-80°F. Sudden changes in temperature may cause buds and flowers to fall off.

FERTILIZER: When plants are in active growth (April to September) apply a balanced (20-20-20) houseplant fertilizer monthly, diluted to 1/4-strength.

CONTINUING CARE: During the shorter days (and longer nights) of fall, the Holiday Cactus forms its flower buds. For a period of about 8 weeks, plants should be kept in the dark 13-14 hours a day and given night-time temperatures of 55-65°F and daytime temperatures of 65-70°F.

Plants bloom best when pot-bound. Repot every 3 years or so using a well-drained potting mix designed for houseplants and a container that is about an inch wider than the previous one.
