The elegant, solid-colored royal purple goblets of Tulip ‘Purple Flag’ and quietly stunning lavender blooms of Tulip ‘Candy Prince’ sound the color theme amid the beautifully flamed blossoms of Tulip ‘Bojangles’ with its creamy white blossoms variously feathered in cherry pink, and the flowers of Tulip ‘Flaming Flag’ each displaying a unique pattern of purple brushstrokes on pristine white petals. The blue spires of Muscari armeniacum provide a tonal blue base and plenty of spring fragrance. Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery.

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

The bulbs in our forced bulb collections (which may include Crocus, Hyacinths, Iris, Muscari, Narcissus, and Tulips) arrive potted, with a layer of protective packaging material on top. You may discard this packing material. 

Set the pots on a sunny windowsill in a cool room. A nighttime temperature of about 50-55°F, such as is found near a window, is ideal. Water when the potting mix is dry to the touch. We recommend removing the pots from the basket or cachepot before watering. Push any Spanish Moss aside, water the pots thoroughly and let them drain before replacing in the basket. Rearrange the Moss around the leaves.

There is no need to fertilize. Please note that the growth of the bulbs will be slower in a cooler part of the house. Warmer temperatures may speed growth, but can result in weaker flowering stems. Bulbs usually begin blooming 4-5 weeks after arrival.

What you do with your bulbs after they bloom depends on your climate and your inclinations. The bulbs can't be forced to bloom indoors again, but they can be planted outdoors--if they are hardy in your area. (Most of the bulbs in our collections are winter hardy to at least Zone 4 [-30°F]. Narcissus 'Avalanche' is hardy to Zone 6 [-10°F].) Continue to water the bulbs after they bloom and keep them in a sunny window. When the threat of hard frost has passed, plant each bulb with a trowel at a depth equivalent to about three times the bulb's height. Expect 2 or more years to pass before the bulbs bloom again. In our experience, Tulips will rarely bloom again. In fact, we think caring for the bulbs after bloom and planting them out in spring is rarely worth the effort, so we prefer simply to toss the bulbs out after they've finished blooming. However, we know of customers who enjoy the process and don't mind the wait.
