Product Details

Chionodoxa forbesii's smaller, upward-facing flowers are bright purplish blue with a white center. Heirloom, 1880.

These Mediterranean natives bloom very early and produce sprays of 5-10 star-shaped flowers in glorious shades of blue, pink, and white. They can carpet the bare soil of perennial beds just starting into growth, or play off the leaf color of Bergenia, Heuchera, and Tiarella, or combine with other April-blooming bulbs, such as Crocus or Trumpet Narcissus. Superb for naturalizing in full sun to partial shade in rock gardens, woodlands, and lawns.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery. 

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email. 

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment.

Latin Name Pronunciation: kee-on-oh-doks'-ah

Bulb size: 5-7 cm 

Plant 2-3 in. deep, 2 in. apart (15-20 per sq. ft.) in full sun to part shade in average soil. Naturalizes by reseeding, which it does readily, especially in a humus-rich soil.

Delightful & critters didn't mess with them

"This glory of the snow was delightful to see as spring came 'round. I did have an issue with frost heave in both locations, but it was easy to push them back into the ground once a friend explained frost heave to me. My mistake was planting them in a couple of small clusters on rather large patches of grass -- so they looked odd from my kitchen window, this little clump of purple. I ordered 100 more this year and will be planting them spaced very far apart all over our grassy front hill so they will, I hope, dot the landscape in a more aesthetically pleasing way. We have an issue with A TON of squirrels & chipmunks, but none seemed to bother these."

Welcome early spring flower

"I planted almost all my 150 bulbs I ordered last fall. I protected the bulbs from the squirrels by putting a net on top and covering with mulch. It looks like it worked and most have flowered beautifully! They are so stunning I will be planting more in Fall 2021!"

Over the years

"My mother began the family tradition of buying from White Flower Farm. Many years ago she purchased these as part of a bulb buying spree and planted them around the base of an oak where they continue to delight me every spring. However, over the passing years I began to notice Chionodoxa popping up all over the yard - one or two in random places around the front lawn, small groups in a wooded area - most appearing where the earth had been disturbed because of construction, or the loss of a tree - various reasons. I like to think that my friendly squirrels are helping in my garden!"

"I planted 50 of these last fall and most came up in early April. Beautiful blue color looked lovely with mini daffodils that are also early bloomers here. I am going to plant more of both this fall."

"I planted pink and blue Chionodoxa a few years ago. I always cover bulb plantings with hardware cloth that I secure with 3" metal "staples." We have abundant squirrels that dig wherever the ground is disturbed. I remove the hardware cloth as soon as the snow melts. The deer eat the pink flowers, but not the blue. Why? I'm ordering more blue. The flowers bloom very early here and provide a spot of color before the rest of my woodland garden gets going."

"Only six of the 50 I ordered came up, and I suspect squirrels or the mild winter--not WFF. Those that did survive are quite cute and pretty. I will order again and hope for more survivors next spring."

Good quality bulbs

"I planted these in the fall, and they came up as promised this spring. The bulbs were good quality, and it appears that most have bloomed. (The squirrels may have taken a couple.) They have been blooming for a couple of weeks. The plants are very short, and it's difficult to see them from our country road, but up close you can admire their beauty."
