Delphinium Delgenius® Glitzy

Packing stems with purple blooms edged with blue-violet and adorned with white “bee” centers, Delphinium Glitzy is certainly a glamorous addition to the world of Delphiniums. The compact, well-branched plants produce mounds of attractive green foliage and are very floriferous, adding dramatic colors and shapes to gardens and bouquets from early summer to fall. This member of the Delgenius® series represents a decade of work by a Dutch breeder to produce Delphiniums with superior hardiness and heat tolerance, a multi-branching habit, strong flower stems with abundant semi-double blossoms, and a tendency to rebloom. The tall hybrid Delphiniums are the outstanding elements of every well-bred garden. However, dwarf forms and the sturdy and graceful species are equally charming in their own way. Delphiniums require full sun and rich soil amended with lime. In the South, they are best planted in the fall and treated as cool-season annuals.

Delivery Timing

We aim to deliver your plants at as close to the proper time for planting in your area as possible. To do so, we consider the USDA Hardiness Zone to which we're shipping, current and forecasted weather at the destination and along the shipping route, and whether your plants are ready for transplant.

In spring, we ship first to the warmest regions and move north as planting conditions improve. For fall deliveries, we begin with the coolest regions and work south. We frequently adjust shipping schedules when extreme weather could put plants at risk while in transit or soon after arrival.

Because different plants reach readiness at different rates and are weather-sensitive in varying degree, a single order may be delivered via multiple shipments. Plants sold as part of a collection, or that are otherwise meant to arrive together, will be shipped together. Please contact our customer service team with two weeks' advance notice if you anticipate being away at the expected time of delivery. 

Tracking information for each package is delivered via email. 

Plant & Container Sizes

We deliver plants in various sizes and stages of growth, and the product detail pages of our website indicate the form and/or pot size in which the plant will be delivered. Pot sizes range from 1 pint to 1 gallon and larger. Many perennials, roses, shrubs and vines are delivered bareroot - that is, not in a container at all. Bulbs and tubers are generally delivered bareroot and fully dormant. We choose container sizes and delivery methods based on how each plant grows best, how we can minimize transplant shock, and how to minimize unnecessary bulk/weight in shipment. 

Caring for Your Plants Upon Arrival

It is important to acclimate greenhouse-grown plants to life outdoors. All plant shipments include simple instructions for handling your plants upon arrival. Further how-to information, including planting instructions, is available on each plant's product page.

Delphiniums require full sun, preferably in a spot protected from high winds. They also need very fertile soil, with a pH close to neutral. If your soil is acid, plan to mix a handful of lime into the bed. And, lastly, all of the tall varieties require staking. Inevitably, a sudden downpour will knock unsupported stems down into the mud, and there's no way to ease that heartbreak. We suggest using two or more loops of twine, arranged in a figure-8, starting near the base and ending just below the flower head.

"Very fertile soil" means soil enriched with plenty of compost or composted manure. Plan to add a balanced, slow-release fertilizer as well.

Yes, Delphiniums require more attention and preparation than some other perennials. But, as our founder wrote, "… no gardener worth his loam would stop growing Delphiuniums just because they are not as rugged as weeds. There is nothing more beautiful or more rewarding …."

Cut the flower stalks of all but D. grandiflorum 'Blue Mirror' to the ground immediately after flowering for a second, smaller show in September. D. grandiflorum 'Blue Mirror' is the best Delphinium for the South but is short-lived there; allow a few plants to go to seed to provide for replacements.

Combine with Peonies, Siberian Iris, Lupines, Shasta Daisies, Roses, and other June bloomers.
