How to Extend Your Peony Season

Did you know you can store Peony buds in your fridge and enjoy their blooms weeks later? Whether you’re preparing for a special event or simply want to stretch the season, here’s how to do it:

How to Store Peonies for Later Bloom

1. Harvest at the Right Stage
Look for buds that feel like a firm marshmallow when gently squeezed—not too tight and not fully open.

What to look for:

  • Buds should be plump, round, and showing some color (pink, white, red, etc.), but still closed.
  • Outer petals may look slightly feathery or soft at the edges, but the bloom hasn’t opened yet.
  • Avoid tight green buds—they’re too immature and may not bloom later.
  • Avoid buds that are already soft and starting to open—they won’t store well.

Cut stems about 16–18″ long, ideally early in the day

2. Dry Wrap & Chill
Strip off the lower leaves. Gather 5–10 stems in a loose bundle and wrap them in dry plastic—a florist sleeve, dry-cleaning bag, or even plastic wrap will work. The wrap should not be airtight—keep it loose enough to allow a bit of airflow and prevent condensation, which can cause mold.
Lay the wrapped bundle horizontally in a refrigerator set at 32–34°F.

Important: Store away from fruits like Apples, which release ethylene gas that can damage the blooms.

3. Store for Up to 3–4 Weeks
Peony buds can remain in cold storage for several weeks if harvested and stored properly. This technique works especially well with certain varieties, including Peony ‘Sarah Bernhardt’.

4. Rehydrate & Enjoy
When you’re ready for blooms, trim the stems and place them in cool water. Keep the vase at room temperature, and buds should begin opening within 12 to 24 hours.

Perfect for weddings, floral arrangements, or simply bringing a little spring and that fabulous Peony fragrance back into your home, weeks after harvest.
