Product Details

Dianthus gratianopolitanus is a hardy, evergreen plant variety valued equally for its masses of fresh pink flowers borne in June and for its dense, carpet-like foliage. The flowers are single, slightly less than 1" in diameter, and distinctly fragrant. It is a vigorous grower, ideal for rock gardens or filling in the front of a border.

Dianthus is a large genus of more than 200 species, mostly from Europe and Asia, that includes the beloved Pinks, Carnations, and Sweet Williams. They should be planted in well-drained soil with a pH close to neutral (7.0). This may call for an occasional dusting of lime. Once first flowering is complete, spent flowers should be removed. Excellent rock garden or border plants.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Lovely

WC Gardener from West Chester, PA

Great addition to the front of the border. Bright pink flowers on a dense carpet of evergreen foliage. A little slow to get going in year one (for me, anyway), but hardy. Looking forward to seeing these mature! Will be purchasing more plants this year for another part of the garden.

Latin Name Pronunciation: dye-an'thus

Most varieties require full sun (partial shade in warm inland areas of the West). D. deltoides varieties tolerate partial shade. All require well-drained soil with a pH close to neutral. Add a handful of lime when planting if your soil is excessively acid. Keep mulch well away from crown. Shear back flower stems after the first wave of bloom to encourage repeat bloom (rebloom is not dependable in the South). Most varieties are evergreen; do not cut back in fall. Prune away winterkill stems in spring.

Growing Dianthus Indoors

For Dianthus plants to bloom properly indoors, they need lots of sunshine (from a south- or southwest-facing window). Water when the top 1" of soil is dry to the touch. Remove faded flowers to encourage the development of new buds. Plants are otherwise undemanding.

When the danger of frost has passed in spring, bring your plant outdoors and place it in partial shade for several days before planting it in full sun. Your Dianthus may not flower outdoors the first year, but you can look forward to its carnation-like blooms in subsequent years.
