Product Details

Product Details

The Monarda 'Raspberry Wine' flowers are wine red and irresistible to hummingbirds. Plants bloom long and hard and show excellent resistance to powdery mildew. A White Flower Farm introduction in 1992.

Monarda is a North American genus that has several species, all of which share tartly fragrant foliage and square stems that typify members of the Mint family. The flower heads are hemispheres of tubular blooms in brilliant colors that present a feast of nectar for pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in mid- to late-summer. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and evenly moist soil. Under these conditions, they will gladly fill any available space but are easily pulled where unwanted and transplant readily.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Disappointed

A viewer from Northeast

Very tiny plant for the price. I wish I could upload a photo.

Wow!

A viewer from Westerville Ohio

I purchased this bee balm last year. It disappeared in a few days, I thought perhaps deer came by and tried it out.
This year it emerged HUGE! Healthy, giant plants that are adding excitement to the garden; hummers, bees, people. I am going to transplant some to the side yard, spreading out this color across the property.
I am new to this plant, it’s a great new addition to the flower bed.

Highly invasive

A viewer from Virginia

It has taken me two years to get this plant out of my garden. It’s very invasive. It’s the first time I have ended up with an invasive plant and it’s been a burdensome experience. I still see pockets of it emerging occasionally and I take immediate action. It will be great to be free of it.

My Favorite!

A viewer from Colbalt, CT

Planted in Spring 2021 in a full sun area. Came up easily and bloomed profusely around June/July. Attracted tons of pollinators, including hummingbirds and even a hummingbird moth! Ordering more for other areas.

Pollinator party

A viewer from Western Mass

One year after planting this is over four feet tall and it is party central for local pollinators. We now get daily visits from a hummingbird, and I have seen every type of bee—bumbles and honeybees and natives. Butterflies, even a couple visits from a hummingbird moth! Right now on a sunny afternoon there must be at least two dozen bees feeding. I have a garden full of ornamental flowers but this one is the top hit. Hasn’t needed staking yet or really much attention at all. Highly recommended.

  • Choose a location in full sun or partial shade with moisture-retentive soil. In dry conditions, Bee Balm is susceptible to powdery mildew.
  • For potted varieties, plant the crown at soil level. For bareroot varieties, plant with the old stems pointing up. Fan out the runners horizontally and cover them with just ¼" of soil.
  • Mulch plants in spring and irrigate during summer dry spells. Plants spread rapidly. Divide every year or two in spring to keep them in check.
