Sedum
Sedum is a large genus of fleshy-leaved plants from temperate and subtropical zones, mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, typically found on rocky or stony ledges. Some of our favorite, upright members have been reclassified as Hylotelephium and other genera. Sedums are succulents, having the ability to store water in their tissues and use it efficiently. These tough, low-maintenance plants prefer average-to-poor soil and require excellent drainage. Also known as Stonecrops, they present a kaleidoscope of substantial, colorful foliage over a long season, topped by star-shaped, nectar-rich flowers for pollinators. These mat-forming or upright plants make an easy-care ground cover. They’re perfect drought-tolerant choices for rocky, sandy, or gravelly soils in rock gardens, containers, pavement edges, stone patios, hellstrips, green roofs, and water-wise gardens of all kinds.
