Product Details
Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, including hummingbirds, will enjoy an extended feast from the profusion of flowers provided by Cuphea llavea 'Diablo.' Plants have upright stems that carry copious cherry-red blooms whose centers look like the faces of bats, thus the common name. These heat-tolerant plants are a carefree addition to containers and garden beds with well-drained soil.
Cuphea is a genus of about 260 species of tropical and warm temperate climate plants in the Loosestrife (Lythraceae) family. The genus includes annuals, perennials, and semi-woody shrubs, some deciduous, some evergreen. Native to the Americas, the commonly cultivated species originate in Mexico and Central America. These low-maintenance plants tolerate heat, are not favored by deer, and cover themselves with vivid orange, red, or purple flowers from summer to fall. The tubular blossoms are small, but numerous and long-lasting. Rich in nectar, Cupheas attract hummingbirds, moths, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators over a long season. Compact form and easy care make them easy to tuck into a garden with full sun and well-drained soil, for a pop of color, or grow in containers. In colder zones, plants can be grown as annuals and discarded after frost has killed them or grown indoors in a sunny window. Perennial in Zones 9-11.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP

We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Latin Name Pronunciation: koo'-fee-ah
Cuphea is a genus of about 260 species of annuals, perennials, and shrubs from warm temperate and tropical regions of the Americas; commonly cultivated varieties are native to Mexico and Central America. These easy-care heat lovers require full sun and well-drained soil and attract hummingbirds and pollinating insects throughout the summer.
Grow in full sun in average, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. Once established, plants can tolerate dryer growing conditions.
Fertilize twice a month in summer with a water-soluble fertilizer (such as 15-30-15) to keep plants flowering all season long.
