Did you forget to order Hyacinth bulbs last fall? You can still enjoy these colorful and cheerful spring blossoms at your house. This season, we’re delighted to offer prepotted containers full of spring-flowering favorites. Exceptional Hyacinthus orientalis 'Gipsy Queen' provides a distinctive and beautiful display of deep salmon blossoms touched with apricot and rose. Heirloom, 1927. Our bulb pots are 10" wide x 5" tall and designed for outdoor display. They arrive ready to begin growing.

Simply set the pot in a sunny spot outdoors after all threat of hard frost has passed. Water it occasionally, and, over the course of a few weeks, watch as green shoots then blossoms appear. Choose a single pot for your porch, patio, or front stoop, or order several different types so you can mix and match colors and flower forms to create a vibrant display.

The genus Hyacinthus, once classified in the Lily family, is now a member of the Asparagus family. Hyacinthus includes three species of spring-blooming perennial bulbs native to the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and northern Africa, of which Hyacinthus orientalis is the well-loved Common Garden Hyacinth. Prized for their vibrant colors and intensely fragrant flowers, they have been bred for centuries to increase flower size, abundance, and range of color—while retaining their rich, unmistakable perfume. Their dense spikes of tubular, star-shaped flowers are borne on upright stems and are best planted in informal groups (verus being lined up like soldiers), where they combine well with Pansies, Sweet Alyssum, and Tulips, or can be tucked among emerging perennials in the garden. Hyacinths perform best in full sun and in rich, well-drained soil that remains warm and dry during summer dormancy. They are also well suited to containers for patios, balconies, and entryways, and are excellent for forcing indoors.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

Our Ready-to-Bloom Hyacinth bulbs are intended to be displayed outdoors in spring. Upon arrival, carefully remove the packing material. You may find pale, tender leaf tips emerging from the potting mix; these will green up once exposed to sunlight. In some cases, the growing medium may be partly frozen, and this is not harmful to your bulbs. Once thawed, gently press down loose soil and brush off any excess, leaving up to an inch of space from the top of the pot to accommodate watering.

Set the Hyacinth bulbs in a sunny location outside. A semi-protected spot near the house—on a porch, patio, or front stoop—is ideal. Bulbs have everything they need to grow and bloom (fertilizer is unnecessary) and have been pre-chilled for the right amount of time. They will endure spring’s freezing and thawing temperatures, and precipitation, with minimal care. Water when the potting mix feels dry to the touch. If there is a basket, we recommend removing the pot before watering if possible, giving it time to drain before replacing it in the basket.

Please note that the growth of the bulbs will be slower in colder temperatures and faster in warmer temperatures. Bulbs usually begin blooming 4-6 weeks after arrival.

What you do with your bulbs after they bloom depends on your climate and your inclinations. The Hyacinth bulbs can be planted outdoors if they are hardy in your area, and most are hardy to Zone 4. If you choose to plant your Hyacinths, plant in the ground at the same level as in the pot. Expect a year or more to pass before the bulbs will bloom again.
