Product Details

Commonly called Ruby Muhly Grass, Muhlenbergia reverchonii Undaunted® is a low-maintenance Ornamental Grass that takes its name from a rugged disposition that’s unfazed by winter cold, summer heat and drought. It forms a neat clump of light green foliage, and in late summer, mounts a display of airy, ruby-tinged flower spikes. Backlit by the afternoon sun, these blooms are breathtaking. This North American native perennial is a great choice for xeric or water-wise gardens as well as dry borders, where it mixes well with Blue Fescue, Yarrow, and Butterfly Weed. 'Pund01s'

Muhlenbergia, commonly called Muhly Grass, is a genus of about 150 species of mostly perennial Grasses growing in open, arid and semi-arid areas of the Western Hemisphere, particularly in the xeric Southwest and dry prairie states. They are warm-season growers that form clumps of fine-textured basal foliage and inflorescences ranging from stiff, narrow spikes to clouds of airy pink or white. Native Muhlenbergia species and cultivars are tough and beautiful plants. They are extremely low-maintenance and drought tolerant, useful in xeriscapes and water conserving situations, and can take the heat. Well-draining soil is essential for winter survival. Here in Connecticut, we have taken advantage of extra-good drainage on a steep hillside site in full sun to grow Muhlenbergia reverchonii Undaunted® with great success. Plant in groups or drifts in full sun on rocky slopes, in sandy, unimproved soil, or as a single spectacular specimen skirted with other waterwise native plants.

Shipping
Every state has agricultural regulations that restrict the shipment of certain plants. We're sorry, but we cannot ship this item to the following states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Thriving in zone 5a

A viewer from Central New York

I purchased 3 Undaunted from WFF 2 years ago. I was concerned they would not survive our harsh winters but they are thriving. Each clump is now 3 foot diameter and they are beautiful throughout the summer and especially in the fall when they send up gorgeous pink seed stalks.

Growing Muhlenbergia

Light: Sun

Watering:Low; requires little to no supplemental water once established

Fertilizer: Do not fertilize, avoid moisture-retentive wood product mulch.

Soil: Well-drained not overly-rich soil, grows well in alkaline, sandy and gravelly soils. Excellent drainage is a must for winter survival in colder areas.

Pests/Diseases: Generally pest and disease free.

Dividing/Transplanting:  Dig up and divide in spring or early summer if the center of the clump dies out.

End-of-Season Care:  Leave standing as long as it looks good and enjoy the winter aspect; cut back in early spring before new growth begins and mulch with the spent foliage.
