Aruncus dioicus is an extremely handsome perennial that throws airy plumes of creamy flowers in June. Within a few years of planting, it achieves shrub-like proportions, growing 5–6′ tall and almost as wide. It is useful in the back of the border and in woodland gardens, where it becomes more impressive with age.
Aruncus is a genus of 3-4 hardy, herbaceous, perennial species growing in damp, mountainous woodlands throughout temperate Northern Hemisphere regions, in North America, Europe, and Asia. Rose family (Rosaceae) members, they are closely related to Filipendulas. Their creamy white flower panicles call to mind a goat’s beard, hence the common name, “Goatsbeard.” These plants require moist, even boggy, fertile soils and part shade. Plants will tolerate deep shade and, in cooler climates, full sun if given steady moisture. They struggle in regions with hot, humid summers. Plants mature slowly but are long-lived, cold-hardy, unbothered by deer or rabbits and rarely, if ever, require dividing.

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Aruncus is a small genus of hardy, herbaceous perennials from damp, mountainous woodlands throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere. They require moist, fertile soils and part shade, but tolerate deep shade and, in cooler areas, full sun if given steady moisture; they struggle with hot, humid summers. Plants mature slowly but are long-lived, unbothered by deer or rabbits, and rarely require dividing.
Light: Part to full shade. Give your Aruncus plants more shade in hotter climates. They can tolerate full sun in cool regions with sufficient moisture.
Soil: Moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil, as found in rich deciduous woodlands. Aruncus prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils. Apply an organic bark or leaf mulch that will increase tilth and fertility as it decomposes.
Watering: Moderate to high watering needs. Consistent moisture is a must, especially in hot or dry weather or when planted in a sunny location.
Fertilizing: Compost is all that is needed when soil is rich with organic matter. Decomposed leaves, as would naturally nourish these plants in their native forest habitat, are ideal. Apply a balanced, slow-release, granular fertilizer in early spring if needed.
Continuing Care: Aruncus requires very little care other than ensuring adequate moisture. Compost and mulch applied in spring and touched up before winter is beneficial. Tall, flowering stems may be removed once flowers have faded, or left to dry on the plant for textural interest. After foliage is killed by frost, plants can be cut down to the ground in fall or spring.
Pests/Diseases: Generally unbothered by pests or diseases. Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or other fungal diseases in especially hot, humid weather.
