Product Details

Called Willow-leaved Sunflower for its narrow leaves and sunny blooms, Helianthus salicifolius is a species native to North America. ‘Autumn Gold’ is a compact form of the species. In spring and summer it forms a tidy mound to 2' tall. In fall, it smothers itself in cheerful golden blossoms which hang on until frost. Bees swarm among the blooms, a reminder that the parent species was designated a Royal Horticultural Society Plant for Pollinators. Leave the spent flower heads and birds will enjoy the seeds all winter long. Deer tend to leave this Willow-leaved Sunflower alone. PP 30,117

About 70 species make up the important genus of Helianthus, all of them native to the Americas. They brighten summer and fall with masses of yellow, gold, and sometimes white Daisies. We offer perennial varieties that are as tough as they are beautiful.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

Latin Name Pronunciation: hee-lee-an'-thus

Perennial Sunflowers are usually large plants, some up to 8' tall, with 2" single or double, lemon yellow flowers in July–September. All have roughly hairy stems and leaves. Combine with Heliopsis, Rudbeckia, Helenium, Hemerocallis, and Ornamental Grasses. Beautiful in the back of the border or in a meadow.

Helianthus require full sun and grow in average soil. Fertilize seldom as too much will cause more foliar growth and fewer blossoms. Water during dry spells and allow Helianthus plenty of room; divide every 2–3 years. No serious pests or diseases, but mildew can occur in humid regions.
